Well cared for leather can keep its character and shape for years. A simple routine of cleaning, suitable conditioning, and sensible storage makes the biggest difference.
Start with the leather type
Check the product label before using any cleaner or conditioner. Smooth finished leather, suede, nubuck, and coated leather need different products and methods. If the finish is unclear, test any product on a hidden area and let it dry before treating the whole item.
Remove dust regularly
Wipe smooth leather with a clean, soft microfiber cloth to remove surface dust. Pay attention to seams, handles, and other areas that collect dirt. For suede or nubuck, use a brush made for that material instead of a damp cloth.
Condition only when needed
For suitable smooth leathers, apply a small amount of the conditioner recommended for the item, following its instructions. Let it absorb, then gently buff away any excess. Overapplying conditioner can leave residue or darken the finish, so begin with a light application.
Handle moisture and heat carefully
If an item gets wet, blot it with a dry cloth and allow it to air dry at room temperature. Keep it away from heaters, hair dryers, and prolonged direct sunlight. Let the leather dry completely before storing it or applying another care product.
Store pieces in shape
Use a broad hanger for jackets and breathable dust bags for handbags. Lightly fill bags with clean, soft material so they hold their shape. Choose a cool, dry, ventilated space and avoid sealed plastic covers that can trap moisture.
Act promptly on stains
Gently blot a fresh spill rather than rubbing it into the leather. Ink, oil, and set-in stains may need specialist attention; aggressive household cleaners can make the mark worse. Always match the cleaning method to the finish.
A simple care routine
Inspect your leather items regularly, remove surface dust, and clean or condition only as their finish and condition require. Consistent, gentle care helps preserve their appearance without over-treating them.
